A behind-the-scenes look at how we help clients find clarity in their colour selections
Not every client walks into a colour appointment knowing exactly what they want - and that’s totally normal. In fact, it’s something we see all the time. One of the most common starting points? “I have no idea what colours I want.”
When that happens, the first thing we do is ask for some inspiration photos. And, true to form, we usually receive a couple of very different images. It might look confusing at first glance - but there’s always a thread of consistency if you know what to look for.
In a recent example, our client sent through two totally different photos. At face value, they didn’t match - but when we looked closer, we found the common ground. Both spaces had clean lines, a uniform palette, and minimal visual noise. The client also specified they only wanted tiles throughout (no floorboards), so we started the process from the ground up - literally.
We pulled a few tile options that aligned with the feel of both photos. Subtle textures, nothing too busy. From there, we took cues from the rest of their references - like Laminex Black with an “AbsoluteGrain” texture to bring in warmth, and Milkwood to balance it out. The beauty is in the layering.
They weren’t sure about tapware either - gold, chrome, black? So we explored all three. One of their images had a very Melbourne-style aesthetic: clean black-and-white contrast, strong lines, crisp details. For that mood, we paired it with chrome tapware. On the warmer side, we explored gold fixtures to complement the timber tones.
By the time the client arrives for their appointment, we’ve already prepared these palettes for them. If they’re still unsure, seeing them side-by-side usually helps make things click. Once we identify which direction they gravitate toward, we start building their full colour selection from that foundation.
At the end of the day, our role is to guide - not overwhelm. When clients don’t know what they want, it’s not a roadblock. It’s an opportunity to help them discover it.
