Choosing Colours for Your New Home Build – Laundry Edition

The laundry might not be the showstopper of your floor plan, but as one of the most hardworking rooms in your home, it deserves more than a second thought - especially when it comes to colours and functionality.

In our latest Friday Flat Lay video series, AUSMAR's Atelier Design Expert Josh walks you through the ins and outs of laundry design - covering pre-planning, future-proofing, style tips, and dual-purpose solutions. Whether you're building your forever home or your first investment property, here's how to make your laundry work beautifully for years to come.

Pre-Planning is Key

“Before we get to the build process, we want to know how you use your laundry,” says Josh. This is where smart planning starts.

Ask yourself:

  • Top loader or front loader? Top loaders often limit your ability to install benchtops.
  • Do you iron in the laundry? If so, you’ll need a conveniently placed PowerPoint.
  • Will you need a broom closet or vacuum station? Josh suggests including a PowerPoint inside the broom closet if you use a stick vacuum - details that are best considered before construction begins.

It’s all about functionality first. Think through how you’ll move in the space and what needs to be integrated before colour comes into play.

Future-Proof Your Design

Designing for the future means your laundry will stay usable - and stylish - for years.

Josh’s tips:

  • Raise your washer and dryer to avoid bending if space allows.
  • Standardise core finishes like flooring, benchtops, and plumbing to match the rest of the home, ensuring continuity and resale appeal.
  • Plan cabinetry early so you don’t sacrifice benchtop space later.

These subtle decisions now will save you frustration - and renovations - later.

Let It Have Its Own Style

“Laundry is a space of work,” Josh says, “but that doesn’t mean it should feel boring.” He encourages clients to have fun with the laundry colour palette.

Josh’s styling notes:

  • Add colour through cabinetry or grout. Options like Laminex ‘Gum Nut’ or ‘Macedonian Mist’ offer subtle vibrancy.
  • Try coloured grout for personality. A green or blue grout can bring a playful edge to neutral tiles.
  • Match benchtops and keep flooring consistent with the kitchen or adjacent areas to maintain flow.

You’re free to differentiate the laundry slightly from the rest of the home - as long as the core finishes align. It should be a space that feels fresh and energising, but easily “closed off” when the chores are done.

Design for Dual Purpose

Josh uses his own home as an example: a laundry that also serves as a butler’s pantry, with cabinetry above for kitchen appliances and laundry machines below. It’s practical, space-saving, and completely personalised.

Other clever combos:

  • Mudroom + Laundry: Add custom storage, hooks, and even a small nook for the dog.
  • Linen storage or drying rails within your laundry cabinetry.

“If you plan well,” Josh says, “we can make it happen.”

Final Thought from Josh:

“You don’t have to have a boring laundry - if you don’t want to. Plan it properly, give it some love, and bring in your personal style.”
