We’re excited to share an inspiring journey with you, one that embodies the true spirit of community support and compassion. As some of you may already know, in 2020, AUSMAR initiated a significant project that would leave a lasting impact on the lives of cancer patients in the Sunshine Coast region – Wishlist House. In this blog post, we’ll delve into how Wishlist House is changing the narrative for cancer patients and the vital role AUSMAR played in making it a reality.

The Challenge of Cancer Treatment

Cancer is a formidable adversary, and the treatments patients undergo are often physically and emotionally draining. For those requiring radiotherapy, the challenges are exacerbated by the limited availability of services. Patients from far-reaching areas like Tin Can Bay and Gympie found themselves facing arduous daily journeys to access vital therapies, adding an extra layer of stress to an already difficult situation.

Wishlist House: A Sanctuary of Support

Enter Wishlist House – a beacon of hope for cancer patients in their most trying times. This charitable initiative was born out of the understanding that patients needed more than just medical treatments; they needed comprehensive support. The story of Martha, a Gympie patient, echoes the sentiments of many who found solace in Wishlist House during their cancer treatment journeys. You can watch her story below.

AUSMAR’s Pivotal Role

In 2020, AUSMAR took up the mantle to initiate the construction of Wishlist House. As a team, we gathered resources and utilised our expertise in building homes to create a space that goes beyond bricks and mortar. The goal was clear: to provide cancer patients with a “home away from home” during their intensive treatments. This was no ordinary project; it was a commitment to community well-being.

Wishlist House: A Home Away From Home

Wishlist House, situated near the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, is strategically positioned to serve patients from Tin Can Bay to Caloundra. For patients enduring long hours on the road, the facility offers respite, convenience, and a supportive environment. Dr. Jeremy Long, Clinical Director of Oncology, emphasizes the significance of this support, especially as patients grapple with the accumulating side effects of their treatments.

Community Support and Gratitude

The success of Wishlist House is a testament to the incredible support of the community, local businesses, and charitable initiatives like “Give Me 5 for Kids.” Dr. Long expresses his gratitude to all who contributed, recognising the immense impact this facility has on the lives of cancer patients.

A Beacon of Hope

Wishlist House is more than just a building; it’s a symbol of hope and resilience. Thanks to the unwavering commitment of the AUSMAR team, this initiative has become a lifeline for those navigating the challenging landscape of cancer treatments. As we celebrate the success of Wishlist House, we also celebrate the power of community collaboration to create meaningful change.

Stay tuned for more updates on how AUSMAR continues to make a positive impact in our community.
